FAQ: Golf in South Africa
When is the best time for a golf holiday in South Africa?
The seasons here are the opposite of those in Europe, making September to May the perfect time for a golf getaway! If you’re heading to northern South Africa – June, July and August are also ideal months to visit.
Can I rent golf equipment?
Absolutely! Most clubs offer rental clubs, trolleys and carts. We’re happy to reserve your equipment for you, and we can even arrange for rental clubs throughout your entire stay. Our rental sets feature the latest Taylor made clubs, all less than a year old.
Are caddies available in South Africa?
Yes, many clubs provide caddies and some even require one per flight. Caddies are typically paid in cash (around €20–€30 per round) and can greatly enhance your experience by helping you navigate the course and read the greens.
Give it a try! Playing with an experienced caddy is not only fun, but it also takes the pressure off if you’re not an expert golfer.
What is the halfway point?
In South Africa, the “halfway point” refers to a break after 9 holes, often enjoyed at a halfway house. Here, you can grab affordable drinks and snacks—like a delicious breakfast of two fried eggs on toast with bacon for just around €3. Many clubs have a mandatory 10-minute break during this time.
Do I need to book tee times in advance?
Yes, we highly recommend booking tee times in advance, especially during the high season (November to March) when clubs are bustling with tourists. However, if you’re looking to play just 9 holes in the afternoon, you can usually book on short notice. Each club has a starter to ensure everyone adheres to their tee times and we’d be happy to reserve your tee times in advance.
Is there a minimum handicap restriction?
Most clubs have a few that require a minimum handicap of 36. A marshal will be on hand to ensure the flow of play is smooth. If you’re a beginner and the course is busy, feel free to pick up your ball after 8-9 strokes to keep things moving. Overall, golfing in South Africa is laid-back and welcoming!
Do I need to show a club ID?
No, you don’t need to present a golf license or be a club member in South Africa. Enjoy the game without the hassle!
What does “affiliated member” mean?
“Affiliated member” refers to members of a South African golf club. Some clubs offer discounted green fees for members of other South African clubs. However, membership is only worthwhile if you play golf very often on your vacation (at least 10 times).
How much time should I plan for an 18-hole round?
You should plan around 5 hours for a round in high season. The halfway point means the game takes a little longer, but it is also much more relaxed.
Are there special tee times?
Yes. Many clubs start from hole one and hole ten in the summer. Therefore, there are so-called block tee times. This means that the game starts between 7 am and 9 am and again from 12 pm. Some clubs only start from hole one and there are continuous tee times.
Can you play on any day of the week?
Only to a limited extent, as many clubs offer so-called member days. A member tournament is played on these days. Guests cannot play at most clubs during this time. For almost all clubs, this is a day during the week and on Saturdays. It is therefore very difficult to get tee times on a Saturday.
