Tourism in South Africa is booming again! Thanks to the weak South African Rand, travel to South Africa has remained affordable. South Africa continues to be one of the cheapest travel destinations for Europeans. In particular, incidental costs such as gasoline and food and drinks in restaurants are significantly cheaper than in Europe.

The South African Tourism Service Association (SATSA), and of course we as well, welcome the opening of the SECURA Traveller Operations Centre by Tourism Minister Patricia de Lille. This is a major step forward for the safety and emergency care of all tourists. Various organizations, together with SATSA and the tourism board, developed and organized this facility, as well as the development of the Secure Traveller app. Anyone can download the app with a “Panic Button” at https://securatraveller.co.za
The ultimate goal of this app and the new Tourism Security Hotline +27 (0)83 318 2475 is to provide everyone traveling in South Africa with immediate help and support in an emergency. Evaluations of security risk areas can be created, allowing crime prevention measures to be implemented. Immediate assistance is also provided in medical emergencies!
In our opinion, this is a fantastic app that can be activated for just 49 Rand (for 30 days). Travel with us? You’ll receive a voucher code for your trip.

As a new free service, we are offering the following voucher for this paid app, which was developed in collaboration with the Tourism Board:
In the Apps Store: Secura Traveller App
With this app, you can press a “panic button” across South Africa – either for medical assistance or for security. When you press the panic button, your phone is located via GPS, and the nearest private security service is dispatched to you. The control room will call you within approximately 30 seconds to provide details. Every traveler should have this app on their phone and activate it! Then you’ll be well prepared for emergencies. If you would like to use this app, we will send you a code that will allow you to activate the app free of charge for 30 days. Please activate it only in South Africa. The control room will make a test call upon activation to ensure everything is working. Furthermore, the activation is only valid for one phone number. If you want to get a South African SIM card in South Africa, you will need the code for the South African number.

The Energy Crisis in South Africa

The electricity producer Eskom is a state-owned corporation that is responsible for ensuring South Africa’s electricity supply. Approximately 77% of electricity is still generated by coal-fired power plants. These plants have been neglected and barely repaired over the past 20 years, and the money available for upgrading the facilities has been lost through corruption. The plants are outdated and now frequently break down, resulting in insufficient electricity being produced.

To prevent blackouts, so-called “load shedding” has been introduced. Eskom announces levels from 1 to 8. Rotating schedules are based on these levels.
